Network management software and tools

Post by Jawad Ahmad Riaz

Network management is a list of processes which govern the working of the network. The procedures and tools that relate to administration, maintenance and working of the network are known as network management systems. The goal of the network management is to guide the authorize users on the issues like passwords, login name and access to shared resource. Network management is a key requirement of small and medium businesses today in order to run their daily operations. The efficient and effective network management does not only depend upon the design and planning of the network but also on the smart choice of network management tools and softwares.

 Components of Network management

The basic components of network management are maintenance, operation, administration and provisioning network. The operation of the network relates to the smooth working of the network. It requires the efficient monitoring of the network at proper time intervals, in order to prevent the end users. The administration of the network includes the monitoring of the network resources and distribution of files .hence administration is related to the control over the network. Maintenance is the process of upgrading and repairing the network and pertinent softwares. It is also concerned with the replacement of equipments, the installation of new device like new router and switches in the network and monitoring the design configurations of the network. Improving the network capabilities in order to add new facilities in the network to provide up to date facilities to the new users is known as provisioning.  Network control, planning, deployment, coordination, traffic routing, cryptography, allocation of resources, frequency allocation, load management, authorization issues and ways to deal with security issues are the fundamental considerations of a network management practice.

The Functions of the Network Management

A famous word used to describe network functions is known as FCAPS. It stands for fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security. ISO telecommunication management describes this terminology to define necessary tasks which can guide the working of the network. Fault management is concerned with the identification of the discrepancies of the network. Fault management system is helpful in isolating the faults and vulnerabilities present in the network and uses trend analysis to identify errors so that the network remains active at all times. The configuration management refers to the process of providing simple configuration techniques and tools to the network. This system also helps in tracking changes made to the network configuration. The accounting management refers to the collection of usage statistics of network users in terms of disk usage, CPU time and Link utilization. Performance management includes the ability of the network to perform better and prepare for the future development. Performance management deals with the problems like average response time, throughput and error rates in the network. Security management is the process of managing and monitoring the access of authorize users to the resources. Moreover it also includes securing the network against external threats.

Network Management Softwares

Network management tools helps in simplifying and integrating network to improve the efficacy of network and reduce the threats and risks. There are plenty of network softwares which are available to enhance the capability of a network. The various network management tools include Windows Network Instrumentation, Cisco network application and Performance Analysis system, CORBA, Java Management Extension, Orion network configuration management, Netscout network performance software and Performance First by NetQos.  Some open sources network management softwares are also available in the market and also available online. Open NMS at SCaLE 2009 and many more. These softwares optimize the infrastructure usage, simplify the operations and perk up performance and also protect service delivery. Today’s network management softwares are compatible and are able to work and match with all network functions like performance management and security management
