The National Academy of Engineering salutes leaders in engineering for their lifetime dedication to their field and their commitment to advancing the human condition through great engineering achievement and/or through innovation in engineering and technology education. The NAE dedicates more than $1 million annually to recognize these leaders and to bring better understanding of the importance of engineering and engineering education to society.

Currently, the NAE presents five awards for engineering achievement and innovation - the Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering, the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize, the Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, the Founders Award, and the Arthur M. Bueche Award.

The Call for Nominations for the 2014-2015 prizes and awards begins January 2, 2014 and ends April 1, 2014.

Awards Recipients

  • The 2014 Arthur M. Bueche Award is awarded to Dr. Siegfried S. Hecker “For contributions to nuclear science and engineering and for service to the nation through nuclear diplomacy.”

  • The 2014 Simon Ramo Founders Award is awarded to Dr. Robert A. Brown “For contributions to understanding of viscoelastic liquids and crystal growth, commitment to diversity in engineering, and leadership in transforming disciplines and institutions.”

  • The 2014 Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering is awarded to John B. Goodenough, Yoshio Nishi, Rachid Yazami, and Akira Yoshino “for engineering the rechargeable lithium-ion battery that enables compact, lightweight mobile devices.”

  • The 2014 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education Award Citation: “For creating an integrated program in engineering innovation from undergraduate through doctorate to prepare students for engineering leadership.”

  • The 2013 Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize is awarded to Rangaswamy Srinivasan, James J. Wynne, and Samuel E. Blum “for the development of laser ablative photodecomposition, enabling LASIK and PRK eye surgery.”
