Thousands go without power as snow and ice storm slams Northeast

WASHINGTON - A snow and ice storm slammed the Northeast and Midwest region of the US, bringing with it freezing cold as hundreds of thousands went without power and hundreds of flights were stranded.

Utility crews worked to restore power to homes and businesses in the U.S. Northeast after the snow storm slammed the Eastern Seaboard from Maryland to Maine, dumping over a foot of snow. Around 100 million people - or one-third of the U.S. population, lives in the region.

The storm left roads coated with ice and smashed tree branches and knocked down power lines. At least four deaths were related to the storm, authorities said.

Pennsylvania was the hardest hit. At one point, 849,000 customers were without power, according to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. By 8 a.m. EST, utility crews had gotten number down to just over 500,000, the agency said, according to Reuters.

"The storm that we had yesterday is pretty much done for Pennsylvania," said Craig Evanego, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in State College, Pennsylvania.

The East was not the only area hit by snow. In Dallas, an early morning snow storm snarled morning traffic.

In Baltimore, pawnshop worker Sheila Bateman said her morning jog with her dogs has become a slippery romp.

"I would be better off with ice skates than running shoes. The dogs sometimes go sliding with their legs going out from under them," she said.

The snow storm has hit construction works, putting a damper on shopping and depleting stocks of the salt used to keep roads ice-free in some areas.

In New Jersey, $60 million has been spent on snow removal as of January 26, putting it on track to break the record of $62.5 million spent last year, said Joe Dee, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, according to Reuters.

At least 479 flights throughout the United States were cancelled, down from 2,893 flights on Wednesday, according to FlightAware.com, an online flight tracking site.

According to the weatherman, two storms will move in off the Pacific in the next two days and make their way across the country, bringing snow to Chicago on Feb. 8 and possibly to New York and Boston the next day.

Bob Smerbeck, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania, said the storm that emerges from these systems will probably be weak.

"We have a chance of snow right now, but we don't have any accumulations," Smerbeck said by phone. "The chance of snow is legitimate for the Northeast."

Storms on Feb 5 and 3 forced airlines to cut 6,564 flights around the U.S., said FlightAware, a Houston-based flight tracker.

There's a chance the storm won't gather any strength at all until it has moved off the continental U.S. and over the Atlantic, Smerbeck said. Nova Scotia would then bear the brunt, while New England might get some snow from the storm's tail.

Crews from Arkansas, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Canada have joined electricity provider PECO's workers to fix the damage to electricity lines, the company said. In all, more than 1,500 workers are in the field, it said.

A similar number have been fielded in the Baltimore area, where some 45,000 homes and businesses remained without power early Thursday, utility Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. said on Twitter.

Tens of thousands also remained without power elsewhere in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with a handful of outages remaining in Ohio as well.
