Rimini Meeting 2014

The Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group attended the 35th Edition of the "Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples" festival held in Rimini held between Sunday, August 24 and Saturday, August 30.

In the South Hall of the Rimini facilities, within the Trenitalia exhibition space, visitors were able to discover the many ways in which the Italian FS Italiane Group is significantly contributing to the modernisation of the Italian transport system.

The company’s attention to major cultural events and important exhibitions, together with the strong commitment to social issues have always represented for an industrial group such as the FS Italiane, crucial levers in the economic development of the country – a natural vocation.

The agreement between the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and the FS Italiane Group

On August 26 in Rimini, an important agreement between the Ministry of Transport and the FS Italiane Group was also signed, focused on new solutions for connecting the airports of Malpensa, Fiumicino and Tessera to the national high-speed, high-capacity network.

The agreement was signed by Maurizio Lupi, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation and Michele Mario Elia, CEO of the FS Italiane Group.

The agreement provides that during 2014 the FS Italiane Group, through its operational company, the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, will begin the first studies aimed at strengthening the supply of railway infrastructure related to airports. The first stage of the project focuses on the development of fast connections with the Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa and Venice Tessera airports, to be achieved through activities articulated on functional phases. The plans also take into account the development of traffic demand expected for the three airport hubs.

A study concerning new commercial high-speed services offered by the RFI are also in scope, the so-called slots, to and from the three airports, identifying the connections and the most requested frequencies with the main Italian cities. The RFI will further verify with all its stakeholders their ability and willingness to commit to the Framework Agreements concerning the use of the new infrastructural capacity/potential.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will then, within February 28, 2015, review the plans drawn up by the FS Italiane Group and define the parameters for the start of the planning process, while also identifying available financial resources. Finally, a timeline that takes into account all phases of the project including design, development and implementation will be shared.

The Agreement is driven by the need to promote quick and efficient connections among the three airports and major cities, as is the case in other European Union countries, in order to develop tourism and business throughout the peninsula, thanks to the reliance on intermodal rail-air transport.
