SFreccia contro il fumo

After the success of the Frecciarosa project for the prevention of the most important women's diseases, on May 31, during the «World No Tobacco Day», the Ministry of Health, the Higher Institute for Health, Umberto Veronesi Foundation and Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane promoted an information and awareness raising campaign to support prevention of diseases caused by smoking.

For four days, from May 28 to 31, a specialized team of No-Tobacco Centres of the National Health Service, in collaboration with the staff of the Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Observatory of the Higher Institute for Health, offered Freccia travellers free-of-charge consultancy services on prevention and treatment of diseases caused by smoking. Leaflets with valuable information to say good bye to cigarettes will be available on board the Freccia trains.

Since 1988, May 31 is an opportunity to spend at least 24 hours without smoking, recalling the serious health risks and effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption, the first cause of avoidable death at world level. Only in Italy, in fact, about 85,000 people die every year, 25% of which with age comprised between 35 and 65.

The main goal of the 2013 campaign is to direct local, national and international efforts to prohibit all forms of advertising, promotion and sponsorship of the harmful tobacco products. The last figures collected in Italy were presented on Friday, May 31 in Rome, during the 15th Convention on Tabagism.
