Rheebridge Open Art Exhibition, 21st – 23rd November 2014
This November Swavesey Village College will throw open its doors and welcome art lovers from across the region. The Rheebridge Open Art Exhibition will be held at the college’s outstanding auditorium space from 21st to 23rd November.
Adult entrants will compete for accolades including the Top Twenty, Rheebridge Awards, and a People’s Choice Award. There will be a free draw to vote for your favourite artwork – which you could win – and the chance to do a bit of Christmas shopping with paintings, sculptures, prints and cards available. The event is free to the public over the weekend (Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm). There will be a preview reception with wine and canapes on the Friday night; tickets are £5 and will be available on the door.
This year will also see the launch of a new Cambridgeshire Area Young Artist Competition (CAYAC), which will showcase and recognise budding artists from local secondary schools including Bottisham Village College, Comberton Village College, Cottenham Village College, Impington Village College, Ixworth Free School, Linton Village College, Melbourn Village College, Sawston Village College, Swavesey Village College, and Thomas Clarkson Academy. Jeremy Newton, Chief Executive of The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, will present the student prizes and the CAYAC shield to the winning school at a teatime reception on the Saturday. See the documentary film Henry Morris: The Life & Legacy, at LDHS this Friday
This documentary film marks the culmination of a project that took place in Sawston Village College’s 80th anniversary year. The project saw young people set out to research the background to the founding of their school, the first village college in the county, and to explore the life of Henry Morris, whose extraordinary vision led to its creation. The film tells the story of that journey.
An extract from the film will be shown at the Longstanton District Heritage Society’s meeting on Friday 7th November, and will be followed by a short talk by Ellen Nowak about her role as the Arts & Community Development Manager at Swavesey Village College.
All LDHS talks are held at 7.30pm in the Village Institute, High Street, Longstanton. Everyone welcome – members free – non-members £2. Tea and biscuits served after.
Musical Theatre Workshop
October half term is quickly approaching and once again Nasu Enzuru Theatre is offering the chance for children to get creative and participate in a 3 day musical theatre workshop. The week will provide 11 – 14 year olds with the opportunity to work towards a performance of Bugsy Malone.
Children can join Stage Director Ella Lyons and her creative team of musicians, actors and dancers for a hands on theatrical experience at Comberton Sports and Arts Centre, from Monday 27th October – Wednesday 29th October
This energetic rehearsal programme will run from 9am – 5pm each day and will be jam-packed full of fun drama games, as well as the rehearsals themselves which will incorporate script work, singing, dancing and acting.

Swavesey Village College Is Recruiting!
SVC is recruiting a part time Arts and Events Coordinator to work alongside the Arts Development Manager and the Events Manager. This is an exciting, flexible role working 20 hours per week, term time only plus two weeks, and will include evening and weekend work. Main responsibilities will be:
- To market and develop the use of the venue and promote upcoming events
- To support the Arts Development Manager in promoting arts activities of all kinds and encouraging the use of school facilities for non-statutory arts activities
- To liaise with site and technical teams to ensure bookings are supported
- To administer the online box office and balance budgets for various events
- To provide Front of House duties during events and conferences, including health & safety checks, ticket sales, box office and managing stewards and helpers
- To liaise with potential customers, provide quotes for lettings & hirings, book rooms, car parks etc. when required
- To raise invoices for lettings and hirings

stART is Recruiting!
The stART Consortium is seeking to recruit an organisation development specialist to support the Consortium members to explore and define a new operational model for stART. It is envisioned that this may encompass a strategic analysis of the new Consortium; a review of the existing transition planning work; and a mapping exercise identifying options and potential. The outcome of the work should be a set of organisational development recommendations for the Consortium.
The stART Consortium also hopes to apply for grant monies to enable engagement of an organisation development specialist in a longer term capacity.

Screen Printing at Swavesey Festival
At this year’s Swavesey Fetsival residents of all ages were given the opportunity to design and print their own canvas bags. The theme of the festival was ‘childhood’ and visiting artist Ricki Outis designed a frame that incorporated nostalgic sweets and the SVC swan logo. Festival-goers then created their own designs to print inside the frame, with fantastic results…
Swavesey Festival Comedy Night
Trust us, you’re gonna want to see this! On Sunday 15th June top comedians Paul Kerensa (of Miranda fame) and Rob Thomas will take to the Swavesey Venue stage with warm-up acts from Swavesey Village College’s very own budding comics! It takes some serious guts to stand up in front of an audience, but that’s what these brave and foolhardy students from years 7 – 10 will do. Described by their mentors as “the best bunch of students we have ever worked with,” you can expect an evening of hilarious entertainment.
