Driver support technologies

Today the driver support systems known as ERTMS/ETCS, SCMT and SSC guarantee safe train travelling regardless of the weather and the psychophysical conditions of the driver. Intelligent systems support the driver by braking the train automatically, providing information, driving remotely. This makes the Italian railways not just the safest in the world but also the most technologically advanced, as recognised through international awards and the assignment of jobs all over the world.

This Italian achievement in the sector has required great commitment and an investment of Euro 4.4 billion across a network of more than 16,500 kilometres and in the trains. Fitting the SCMT (Train Movement Control System) on the network on which 90% of the trains travels (about 11,400 km) was started in 2003 and was completed at the beginning of 2008, while the SSC (Train Driving Support System) was installed on the remaining 4,900 kilometres of the secondary network.

The ERTMS/ETCS-Level 2 is dedicated to High Speed/High Capacity lines and remotely controls a train travelling 300 km/hour, via constant communication through radio waves between the train and the operating rooms. The Ermts was chosen by the European Union as the technological standard for interoperability between the different national networks, thus confirming the choices made by FS.
