A piece of gravel flies up and hits your windshield. Now, you’re looking at a crack or chip that wasn’t there a minute ago. Frustrating? Yes. But it may not be as big a deal as you think. Before you rush out to have your windshield replaced, determine if it can be repaired instead. You’ll save a ton of money, if you’re able to go this route. Here’s the scoop.

Your windshield should be repairable, if:

  • You have a crack that fits under a dollar bill
  • You have a chip that fits under a quarter
  • The damage is on the outside of your windshield -- not the inside
  • The damage isn’t on the edge of the windshield
  • The damage isn’t in your line of sight
  • The damage isn’t over your rain sensors or internal radio antenna, and it hasn’t affected your defrost
  • The damage isn’t too complex (a crack that runs in too many directions or more than three chips will require a windshield replacement)

How to Save Money on a Windshield Repair

If you’ve determined that your vehicle is a good candidate for a windshield repair, there are several ways to do it for less. Here are your options:

Do-It-Yourself – Windshield repair kits are readily available at auto parts stores, and they’re fairly easy to use. Here’s a tutorial to walk you through the process.

Get a Quote Online – Most windshield repair shops offer better pricing when you request a quote through their website. Jump online, and you could save an easy $20.

File a Claim – Many insurance companies will cover 100% of the cost of a windshield repair or replacement, and they’ll even waive your deductible. Check to see if this benefit is included in your coverage.

Don’t Put Off Windshield Repairs

Small windshield cracks can quickly grow into big, unrepairable cracks, if they aren’t addressed promptly. So, don’t put off your repair.
