As the calendar flipped to 2015, we asked DPReview readers to look back at their photographic year and send us their favorite shots from 2014 so we could feature some standouts on our homepage. The response was overwhelming.

We've sorted through 1400+ submissions and made selections of our favorites in three - inevitably quite broad - categories: 'People', 'Places' and 'Things'. Perhaps I'm too biased. Everyone has different tastes. I have seen many more excellent photos on here that did not make the final cut. There are some good photographs here, but I think the judging should have been left solely to the dpreview public and left out the dpreview staff out of the mix. This could easily been done with tier voting in stages to round down to around 50-25 images for the final voting. We all have opinions though ;-)

1. Beauty contest is in the eyes of the beholder or someone irrelevant.
2. Photo contest is subjective and objective all messed up when the photos are taken by different equipment, of totally different scenes.

I submitted ONE shot, only to find later that there were three categories.

How about a "MONTHLY MY FAVORITE SHOT THIS XXX MONTH" ?

I read dpreview all the time, but never saw anything about this. Wished I had, I shoot Motorsports Photography at a local Road Course.

Saw the top frame of the site just few minutes ago and have no word but "Thank you", Thank you so much. Made my year at least :D. Many comments here are true, there are pure jewels in the shots you picked, and my own favs are in people 1 and especially 6, which is incredible. But they are all great.

I mean, what particular camera was used for each winning entry? Hope the photographers can also share the settings. Secret perhaps in producing these kinds of captures?

You can have this information by viewing pictures in the members gallery. You have to click the link to the authors profile page then go to their gallery. I was looking for the same and only found this trick, so maybe there is something more simple, don't know.

Download picture, open, look at picture properties, all is revealed.

Very nice images, all of them! It's not wonder they were the readers pics as they were all deserving.

One thing I did notice was not a single fave/winner was submitted by the very vocal SonyCanikon raving/raging fanboys that pollute these forums. Wonder why that is hmmm?

Ahh, so it turns out that it was: my-best-shot S -2014

We were allowed to post multiple photos. What a shame, wont bother entering in the future.

No, we asked for your best shot but we probably didn't make that clear enough. Where multiple shots were submitted by a single person we just picked out one of them for review. Nobody should have more than a single image in the final selection.

So where multiple shots were submitted by a single person, you picked one out of them for review, not the first submitted by the looks of it, I looked at the places and first thing I see is a user who submitted multiple photos and I'm pretty sure it was his second that was picked. Hardly fair. So yeah wont bother submitting anything in the future.

I'm honoured that you picked my shot to display here. It really made my day! As it happens, 2014 was the year that I tried to 'step up my game' in terms of my hobby, having traded in the old point-and-shoot for a second-hand 50D and some inexpensive primes. More importantly (I guess) was learning to think before shooting. Glad to see you guys think it's already paying off ;-)

I was surprised/pleased to see my photo selected and perhaps have a slightly similar story. I finally stepped up from a point-and-shoot last year. I had been away from photography for many years and still have limited time for it. (Last year I found dpreview helpful when trying to understand what cameras might work for me.) I am experimenting with photography now whenever I can. I am always dissatisfied with what I've done, so it was a good feeling to look back and select something that seemed successful from last year and a lovely surprise to have it chosen by dpreview.

I also enjoyed looking through the diverse submissions for the best shot of 2014 and then coming back and going through the selected images. The best of a year seems like a great idea.

Very nice pictures all-around! Let this be a reminder to trolls and fanboys that THIS is what photography is about: no emphasis on what camery was used, just the end result as the photographer envisioned it.

@DPR: a pity that it isn't possible to easily navigate though the pictures in a screen-filling format - having to click on every image to see it full-size and then closing the opened tabs again is very cumbersome. Also, I found the categories quite confused - I realize the mamoth task it must have been to make the selections, but the "things" and "places" categories put images together that have nothing in common. I'd have gone for the more traditional "People", "Nature", and "Urban", or something along those lines. Nonetheless, thanks for the efforts!

A great selection of photographs. Thanks for choosing my picture of a lily, which was a Christmas present. It was taken with an E-M5 and 14-150 using two Elinchrom RX One's.

Excellent photos. Truly. At least one lesson of this is: it requires work. Once in a while maybe a great photo just falls on you, but mostly it's just a lot of hard work.
