Taxis

Taxi outside hotel

When you see a taxi with its light on, i.e. available for hire, simply lift your arm and lean out from the pavement slightly to get the taxi driver's attention. Refrain from shouting 'Taxi', waving frantically, or giving a piercing whistle.

Tell the driver your destination before getting in. In a black London cab the driver will be the proud possessor of 'the knowledge', and will know where you are going and the fastest way of getting there.

If you are taking a mini-cab or a taxi in another town or city you may need to add a few words of explanation ("it's just off the London Road", for example) if you want to avoid driving around in circles.

Men should allow women to get in first; in London-style taxis women should take the banquette seat while men should take the fold-down seats if necessary.

At your destination get out and pay the driver through the front window. The going rate for tipping is ten per cent.
