The Rt Hon Margaret Hodge, MBE, MP

The former Labour minister (for Culture and Tourism, for Work, and for Children) has arguably had more influence on public life in opposition. She first entered politics as a councillor in Islington, and became MP for Barking in 1994. She has recently found a new lease of life chairing the Commons public accounts committee, where she has repeatedly set the political agenda through her rigorous examination of issues such as tax avoidance, winning a reputation for making company bosses squirm by exposing their tax-avoiding tactics.
