Iwona Blazwick, OBE

DIRECTOR, WHITECHAPEL GALLERY

Since the reopening of the Whitechapel Gallery in 2009 after its £13.5 million expansion, Iwona Blazwick has become a dominant force on London’s art scene. Having worked at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, AIR Gallery, Tate Modern and as an independent curator in Europe and Japan, she was well placed to accede to the position of the Whitechapel Gallery’s director in 2001. As well as her curatorial work, she has worked as a contemporary art editor at Phaidon Press and continues to publish extensively on art. Today she is also Chair of the London Cultural Strategy Group and the MaxMara Art Prize for Women, as well as serving on Film London’s Jarman Award and on the advisory board of the Government Art Collection. She is also a fellow of the Royal College of Art.
