The Hong Kong Cup is a Group 1 flat race run over a distance of 2,000 metres (approx 1.25 miles) and is for thoroughbreds aged three and over. With a purse of approximately $HK 22 million (£1.8 million) it is the richest 2,000-metre turf race in the world.
This mid-winter race at Sha Tin Racecourse has been run since 1988, when it was limited to horses trained in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. In 1990 it was opened to horses trained in Europe
Located in the New Territories, Sha Tin has two grandstands, with a capacity of 85,000. It hosts over 450 races per season.
