Dame Hilary Mantel, DBE

Novelist

Double Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel, whose every public utterance makes headlines, has been stirring up controversy of late with her provocative short story The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. When Mantel was a young child her parents separated and after the age of eleven she never saw her father, an experience which has provided inspiration for much of her work. Before she became a giant of the literary scene, Mantel read Law at LSE before transferring to the University of Sheffield and began writing her first novel soon after graduating. She’s been winning hearts and accolades ever since, with historical hits Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies detailing the life of Thomas Cromwell, as well as hard-hitting novel Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, inspired by her four years in Saudi Arabia. The third Cromwell instalment The Mirror and the Light is set for release imminently.
