Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery, Imperial College London

Ara Darzi is renowned as one of the world’s leading surgeons, a pioneer in robotic surgery and an advocate for innovation in the NHS. Born in Iraq to parents who had fled the Armenian genocide, Darzi moved to Ireland at the age of 17 to study Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons and then Trinity College, Dublin. After a number of years in the field, he now holds the eminent position of Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London and was appointed chairman of the Institute for Global Health Innovation in 2010. As a former health minister, Global Ambassador for Health and Life Sciences and leader of the London Health Commission for Boris Johnson, Darzi is a key player in global healthcare policy and reform influential both through his own work in medical science and the influential platform his institutional positions provide him with.
