Sir Nicholas Serota, CH

As the current director of the Tate galleries, Sir Nicholas Serota is one of the most prominent figures in the art world. He was recently named the world’s most powerful person in contemporary art by ArtReview’s 2014 Power 100 List for his directorship of, in particular, the Tate Modern. Having begun a degree in Economics, Serota switched to History of Art at Cambridge before studying at the Courtauld Institute in London. He became director of the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford followed by East London’s Whitechapel Gallery, before eventually taking the top spot at the Tate in 1988. Known for his passion for contemporary art, he is often on the jury for the Turner Prize and was appointed Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2013 for his services to art.
