Charles Robert Saumarez Smith, CBE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

Not only is Charles Robert Saumarez Smith the current chief executive and secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts, but he is also a respected cultural historian with specialisms in the history of art, architecture and design history. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, he went on to study at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and the Warburg Institute. He has lectured on Art History at Cambridge, Oxford and the University of Essex, and has been director of both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery. A prolific blogger, he is now visiting professor at Queen Mary University of London and is currently overseeing fundraising for the Royal Academy before its 250th anniversary in 2018.
