Prof Sir David Payne, CBE

Phototonics Professor at the University of Southampton

Currently Professor of Phototonics and director of the world-renowned Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton, Sir David Payne is a true pioneer in the fields of telecommunications, nanophotonics and laser technology. His invention of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier is widely regarded as one of the most important developments in modern communications, having facilitated the internet’s rapid growth through exceptionally fast transmission and amplification of extensive amounts of data. Every time you use your phone or the internet, it is because of the talents of Professor Payne. He was appointed a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2005 and was knighted in 2013 for his services to photonics research and applications.
