Choosing the Best Man
There is much more to being a best man than organising an unforgettable stag night and making a funny best man speech: with the privilege of the position comes a huge amount of responsibility and many duties.
- Forward planning and good organisational skills are key.
- High levels of diplomacy, confidence, thoughtfulness and reliability are needed.
- The best man will be involved during the planning stages, so he must be willing to dedicate a considerable amount of time in the run-up to the actual wedding day.
- He must make sure that the day runs as smoothly as possible and that everyone is fulfilling their duties, whilst also being there for the groom.
- The groom must choose a best man who gets on well with the bride. She should have confidence that he will successfully perform his duties up to and on the wedding day.
Sometimes the groom can't choose between two friends. If there are two best men, generally one looks after the logistics of the ceremony and the reception and the other attends the groom on the day. One of them can make the speech, or they could join forces and do it together.
