Ian Blatchford

Director, Science Museum Group

Since 2010 Ian Blatchford has been director of the Science Museum Group, which comprises institutions including London’s Science Museum and York’s National Railway Museum. He previously held the role of deputy director at the Victoria and Albert Museum from 2004, having joined in 2002 as director of finance and resources. After gaining degrees in Law and Renaissance Studies, Blatchford worked in the city at the Bank of England and Barclays de Zoete Wedd. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, and it was only after pursuing a career in the financial world that he moved into the culture sector, joining the Arts Council as deputy finance director in 1996. Blatchford is passionate about the role of museums in raising scientific debate and literacy for all ages.
