Lucian Grainge, CBE

Widely acknowledged as the most influential Briton in the worldwide music business, Lucian Grainge is the chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Group, home of Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Kanye West. He began his career after leaving grammar school and landing a job as a runner at MPC, a talent scout company, and has now been in the music industry for more than 30 years. Grainge is an assiduous advocate for the recorded music business and has played an integral role in the careers of many top artists including ABBA, U2, Amy Winehouse and Andrea Bocelli. In 2012 he also oversaw UMG’s $1.9 billion acquisition of EMI’s recorded-music assets and was appointed a UK business ambassador in 2012. In 2014 he was also awarded an Icon Award by the Recording Academy in recognition of his contributions to the music business.
