Costs

A wedding dress is likely to be the most expensive item of clothing the bride has ever worn.

It is easy to get carried away, but a realistic budget should be set.

Wedding dresses vary hugely in price so it is sensible to only try on those that are affordable.

Once the dress has been chosen, the shop will require a deposit - normally 50 per cent of the total cost.

The balance will be due on the day of collection, but expected alteration costs must be discussed.

Alterations are often charged by the hour and can really add up. Shops may offer a staggered payment option to make more expensive dresses affordable.

If a made-to-measure dress is required, it is often more expensive.
