Prof Sir Michael Richards, CBE

Oncologist and Chief Inspector of Hospitals, England

Former oncologist Sir Michael Richards is credited with significantly improving the cancer survival rates in England. In 1999 Richards was appointed the first national cancer director in the Department of Health, and in 2013 became chief inspector of hospitals in England. This role means he is responsible for assessing the quality of care on offer to individuals. The position was created at the request of Prime Minister David Cameron in response to proposals suggested by the enquiry into failings at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust. In 2013 the Health Service Journal declared Richards to be the third most powerful person in the English NHS and in 2014 he received a Cancer Research UK Lifetime Achievement Award.
