For nine days this historic city is transformed into a book-lover's paradise with over 120 literary events on offer. The programme is an eclectic and inspirational mixture of talks, debates and workshops, featuring historians, scientists, novelists, poets, and politicians. There are a number of free events - including poetry readings, and recordings of short story readings for BBC Radio 4.
There is a special focus on families, with lots of entertainment available for children and events in local schools. There is also a varied programme of writers' workshops, covering everything from copy-editing and publishing your own work to honing your writing skills.
The Festival takes place in a number of venues - the Guildhall is its base, but it also uses a number of theatres, galleries and the library - and because the town centre is compact, everything is within easy walking distance. 2016 dates are provisional.
