War & Peace
The centenary of the start of World War I and the departure of British troops from Afghanistan have defined 2014 as a momentous year in British military history. Elements of war and its aftermath, both peaceful and otherwise, have been felt throughout the country, commemorated by events from ‘Lights Out’ to the Tower of London poppies. On top of the historical connotations for British armed forces, the world has been shaken by terrorist atrocities such as the Peshawar school massacre, the rise of IS and the Charlie Hebdo attack. All of these events have touched the UK in one way or another and have implications for national security. The Debrett’s 500 list recognises those individuals who play an influential role in defending the United Kingdom and preserving our peace and stability, both at home and on foreign soil.
