David Hockney, OM, CH

ARTIST

A true leviathan of British art, renowned pop artist David Hockney is probably best-known for his vivid Yorkshire landscapes and joiners (photo montages). Born in Bradford, he attended the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he took part in the famous Young Contemporaries Exhibition which heralded the arrival of British pop art. He later moved to Los Angeles where he created his iconic sun-drenched swimming pool paintings and by the mid-1970s began to move from painting into photography, lithography and costume design. Much of Hockney’s work unashamedly explores previously taboo subjects such as homosexual love, and in a 2011 poll of more than 1,000 British artists, he was voted the most influential British artist of all time.
