Carol Ann Duffy, CBE

Poet Laureate

Britain’s first female and openly LGBT Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy has enjoyed considerable popularity on the English GCSE and A-Level syllabi for many years, thanks to the accessibility of her language and the social issues she tackles. Born in an underprivileged area of Glasgow, she began crafting her own poetry aged 11 and decided from an early age that she wanted to be a writer. Growing up, she would take her four brothers’ library cards so that she might borrow more books, and later went on to read Philosophy at the University of Liverpool. She recently commissioned a volume titled Poetry Remembers to commemorate the Great War, featuring both long-loved and original poems, and is currently Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University.
