Dame Nancy Rothwell, DBE, DL

Vice Chancellor, University of Manchester

The first female vice chancellor of Britain’s largest university, the University of Manchester, Dame Nancy Rothwell is a professor of Physiology. Her current research is focused on strokes, and in addition to her academic commitments, Rothwell has been involved in running and advising various research and funding bodies including Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and the Biotechnology, Biological Sciences Research Council. A number of Rothwell’s research discoveries have been translated into clinical benefit, and she has done great things for furthering public awareness of science. Rothwell has helped turn Manchester into a scientific dynamo.
