Ralph Rugoff

DIRECTOR, HAYWARD GALLERY

Since his appointment as director of internationally-renowned London art venue the Hayward Gallery, Ralph Rugoff has revived the gallery as one of London’s most popular venues for contemporary art. Born across the pond in New York, Rugoff studied Semiotics at Brown University before embarking on a path towards art writing and criticism, most notably for LA Weekly. He later became a curator, holding the position of director at the California College of the Arts Wattis Institute in San Francisco. As director of the Hayward, Rugoff has produced several acclaimed exhibitions, many focusing around large installation-based works which aim actively to encourage audiences to engage with the works. Rugoff’s efforts have made the Hayward one of the most cutting-edge major art venues in London.
