Ziba de Weck Ardalan

FOUNDER, THE PARASOL UNIT

When Ziba de Weck Ardalan arrived in London in 2000 she had few contacts and little influence in the capital. Today, her gallery Parasol Unit, founded in 2004, is one of London’s most distinguished, famed for its ambitious exhibitions showcasing international artists and running a programme of engagement activities for the public. Born in Iran to an eminent family, Ardalan read for a PhD in Chemistry in Geneva before studying History of Art at Columbia in the US. After a stint as an intern and later guest curator for the Whitney Museum in New York, she founded and ran the Swiss Institute, which inspired her to open her own space. The opportunity to do so in London came along a few years later, and today Parasol Unit presents four exhibitions every year by largely unknown artists who catch Ardalan’s discerning eye.
