To promote peace was one of the central promises Justin Welby made upon his confirmation as Archbishop of Canterbury. With the authoritative platform that has been bestowed upon him, he has become a well-cited commentator on matters of national and international interest. In 2014, Welby warned that world leaders risked conflict against Islamist extremists, advocating the need for a long-term effort to build fair and sustained peace. Welby is an expert on the history and politics of Kenya and Nigeria and has lectured at the US State Department on reconciliation.
