International businessman, politician and philanthropist, the former Conservative deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft has given millions of pounds to the party since the 1980s but made no secret of his displeasure at the Tories’ shift to the middle ground in the early years of the Coalition government, and the donations temporarily dried up. The Conservatives’ recent drift back to the right appears to have revived his enthusiasm for bankrolling the party.
