Richard Curtis, CBE and Lenny Henry, CBE

Founders, Comic Relief

Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry, familiar faces and huge talents from the world of British film, theatre and television, founded Comic Relief in 1985 in response to famine in Ethiopia, with the aim to create a world free from poverty. Ever since, its biennial television extravaganza, alternating with sister project Sport Relief, has become a staple of the British calendar, and as of 2015 the charity has raised over £950 million. The 2013 event raised £75,107,852, the highest so far. The charity claims to have helped 3 million people affected by HIV in Africa and to have protected over 6 million people from malaria, as well as working to promote education in the poorest African nations. Mental health discrimination, domestic violence and child abuse are also a few of the issues which Comic Relief is committed to ending.
