Alex Salmond, MSP

Almost half a year since the Scottish referendum, Alex Salmond is still a recognisable figure in Britain. As leader of the Scottish National Party and first minister of Scotland, he campaigned to leave the 300-year-old union before standing down last November. After graduating from the University of St Andrews with a 2:2 degree, Salmond was elected as an MP in 1987 representing Banff and Buchan, as national convener for the Scottish National Party in 1990 and as first minister of Scotland in 2007, making political history as the first nationalist ever to have done so. He gained popularity as first minister of Scotland thanks to his ability to build and embrace unlikely alliances across the political spectrum, and will continue to exert great influence in the Scotland debate as he stands for Westminster.
