Jay Jopling

OWNER, WHITE CUBE GALLERIES

As both gallerist and art dealer, Jay Jopling is a key figure in today’s art world, and has been truly crucial in repositioning London as the leading international centre for contemporary art. Born in Yorkshire, Jopling studied at Eton before reading English Literature and History of Art at university in Edinburgh, moving down to London after completing his MA. Although his first, rather less glamorous, job involved selling fire extinguishers door-to-door, he soon embarked on a career in art, working with several young and promising artists including Damien Hirst. His original White Cube gallery was opened in London’s West End in 1993 as a space to showcase British and international artists who have included Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley and Lucian Freud. Jopling has since set up several more White Cube galleries across London as well as in Sao Paulo and Hong Kong.
