The Rt Hon the Lord Foster of Thames Bank, OM

ARCHITECT, FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN, FOSTER + PARTNERS

Still unchallenged as the grand old man of British architecture, Norman Foster is the innovative architect behind London’s Gherkin and Millennium Bridge and Berlin’s Reichstag. Raised in a working class Manchester family, he was inspired to pursue a career in architecture from a young age after his sketches of Mancunian buildings were noticed by a clerk at Manchester Town Hall. His large Battersea-based firm, Foster + Partners, which he founded in 1967, is a powerhouse designing typically progressive modern buildings worldwide, and currently undertaking work on the Canary Wharf Crossrail station. Since its inception, the practice has received more than 470 awards, won more than 86 national and international competitions and snatched the top spot in The Architects’ Journal AJ100 practice rankings.
