Former Wife of a Marquess
If a marriage between a marquess and marchioness has been dissolved, the former wife (although no longer a peeress) may continue to use her title as a marquess's wife, preceded by her forename (unless she remarries*).
How to address the Former Wife of a Marquess
The recommended (social) style of address is as follows:
Beginning of letter | Dear Lady Audley |
End of letter | Yours sincerely |
Envelope | Elizabeth, Marchioness of Audley |
Verbal communication | Lady Audley |
Invitation | Elizabeth, Lady Audley |
Description in conversation | Lady Audley |
List of Directors or Patrons | Elizabeth, Marchioness of Audley |
Place card | Elizabeth, Marchioness of Audley |
Legal document | Elizabeth, Marchioness of Audley |
*If the former wife of a marquess subsequently remarries she adopts her style of address from her present husband. Thus if Elizabeth, Marchioness of Audley, marries Mr Charles Robinson she becomes Mrs Charles Robinson.
