Chris Dercon

DIRECTOR, TATE MODERN

As director of London’s celebrated Tate Modern since 2011, Chris Dercon has overseen the continued growth of the gallery’s international outlook and exhibitions, and secured its reputation as one of the world’s foremost homes of modern art. Belgium-born Dercon was educated in Amsterdam and Leiden where he studied Art History, Theatre Studies and Film Theory before embarking on a career as a documentary maker, lecturer, art historian and curator. He has previously held roles as programme director at New York’s MoMA PS1, at the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, and as director at the Haus der Kunst in Munich from 2006 to 2011. He is currently overseeing the intimidating challenge of amassing funds for the gallery’s new building, which is set to open in 2016.
