The Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, OBE

Anti-racism campaigner

21 years after the murder of her son Stephen Lawrence in a racist attack in south London, Doreen Lawrence is increasingly recognised and respected as a public figure of genuine stature, campaigning with quiet dignity on largely race-related issues. She took part in the opening ceremony of London 2012, was made a life peer in September 2013, and in 2014 was named Britain’s Most Influential Woman by BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. In addition to her work with the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which encourages young people from ethnic minorities to realise their potential, she is on the board of Liberty, is a patron of Stop Hate UK, and has also sat on a number of Home Office panels. She says that her greatest challenge is ‘the sustainability of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to transform lives, particularly during the economic downturn.’
