Idris Elba

Actor

One of the biggest names in acting to emerge in the last few years is that of Idris Elba. Born in the London borough of Hackney to Sierra Leonean and Ghanaian parents, Elba won a place at the prestigious National Youth Music Theatre after leaving school. Various odd jobs followed his graduation, including tyre-fitting and cold calling, while he tried to make his way into British television. After being discouraged by an uninspiring series of small roles, Elba decided to move to the bright lights of New York where he secured the role that would catapult him into stardom, that of crime boss Stringer Bell on hit show The Wire. Since then, he has wowed in BBC series Luther for which he won a Golden Globe, and moved as Nelson Mandela in the biopic Long Walk to Freedom. As well as parts in Thor, Prometheus, American Gangster and Pacific Rim, Elba is also a talented DJ.
