Married Name Checklist

Passport Office

The UK passport service will allow a passport to be issued with the bride's new future name up to three months prior to the wedding. Once it has been altered the bride cannot use her passport until she is married. Ensure that the name on the bride's honeymoon tickets corresponds with that on her passport.

dvla

The DVLA requires the bride to send original identity documents showing proof of her change of name, her photo card and its paper counterpart. The bride can drive while her licence is with the DVLA.

inland revenue

The bride must inform the Inland Revenue of her name change using her National Insurance number as a reference.

health

The bride should update her records with her GP; her NHS number will not change. She should also inform her dental surgery and any other specialists of the change. Most gyms or private members clubs wish to see new identification documents.

financial

The bride should change the names on all her bank accounts; she will need her marriage certificate. A name change will not affect any direct debits, but new cards will take a few days to be sent out.

It is necessary to contact all relevant mortgage, credit card, store card, mobile phone and insurance companies.

correspondence

Email addresses and social networking sites should be updated. Business cards may also need to be reprinted.
