Demis Hassabis

Artificial Intelligence Researcher and Founder of Deep Mind Technologies

British Cypriot Demis Hassabis has had an extraordinary career. A master standard chess prodigy aged 13, he has enjoyed success not only as an artificial intelligence researcher, but as a computer game designer, neuroscientist and world-champion gamer. After taking his A-Levels two years early, he joined game design studio Bullfrog Productions where he worked with renowned programmer Peter Molyneux. He left to read for a degree in Computer Science at Queens’ College, Cambridge before founding independent games developer Elixir Studios in 1998. A PhD in cognitive neuroscience preceded a research post at the Wellcome Trust and a role as visiting scientist at MIT and Harvard. He left academia in 2011 to co-found London-based machine learning start-up Deep Mind Technologies – acquired by Google in 2014 for a reported £400 million – where he is now Engineering Director.
