Adults
Parents, godparents and guests should be smartly dressed for a baptism. Formal day dress is usually expected, but hats are no longer the norm nowadays except for very grand services.
Parents and godparents should pay special attention to their dress and appearance on the day as they will receive lots of attention. It is worth wearing something in a 'child-friendly' colour that won't show accidental stains and spills.
THe Baby
It is important to remember that babies grow at an unpredictable rate, so don't buy an outfit or check an heirloom for size too far in advance.
Traditionally, the infant is always dressed in white to symbolise purity.
Many families have traditional christening gowns that have been handed down through the generations.
Alternatively, the infant may be dressed in a simple white outfit. More modern parents may also choose a more contemporary option, such as a sailor suit for a boy or a simple dress for a girl.
On a practical note, dress the baby last thing before the service to ensure that the outfit is kept as pristine as possible.
