How to Address a Dentist

Dentists are correctly addressed as surgeons (unless additional qualifications allow their title to be that of doctor). Dentists with additional qualifications (eg DChD, FDS RCS) are usually addressed as a doctor.

Beginning of letter Dear Mr Jones; Dear Mrs/Miss/Ms Jones
Envelope William Jones, Esq, FDS RCS*; Mrs Mary Jones, FDS RCS*
In conversation Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Jones

Additional Qualifications

Dentists with additional qualifications (e.g. DChD, FDS RCS) are usually addressed as a doctor, in which case they should be addressed as follows:

Beginning of letter Dear Dr Faulkes
Envelope Dr Petra Faulkes, DChD, FDS RCS*
In conversation Dear Dr Faulkes

* The order of letters denoting medical qualifications after the individual's name should be placed in the correct order.
