Camila Batmanghelidjh, CBE

Founder and Director, Kids Company

One of the few people with any positive suggestions to make about the problems of young men getting sucked into gangs, Camila Batmanghelidjh has helped raise around £140 million for neglected street children. More importantly, she has raised awareness of the vulnerability of deprived young men for whom gangs provide a sense of belonging that is rarely available to them elsewhere. The child of a wealthy Iranian family who lost everything in the 1979 revolution, Batmanghelidjh is a trained psychotherapist who also founded Place2Be, which works with troubled children at primary schools across the UK. In recent years she has been showered with accolades, including Woman of the Year, Social Entrepreneur of the Year and Most Admired Chief Executive, granting her voice increasing weight in discussions of policy at a national level.
