Lakshmi Mittal

Chairman and CEO, ArcelorMittal

Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal is CEO and chairman of the world’s biggest steelmaker, ArcelorMittal. Over his career, Mittal has built a global empire out of a modest family steel manufacturing business, and in 2007 was listed as the richest man of Asian descent in the UK. Born into an underprivileged family in the Indian state of Rajasthan, Mittal graduated from St Xavier’s College in Calcutta with a B.Com degree from the University of Calcutta, and opened his first steel factory in 1976 in Indonesia. It was the merger with Luxembourg firm Arcelor in 2006 which granted Mittal’s company global dominance, and today he owns 38% of the company. Among the many boards of which he is a member, Mittal has sat on the board of directors of Goldman Sachs since 2008 and the board of directors of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company.
