Practicalities
The beginning of the reception is a crucial time and sets the tone for the day. There must be plenty of drinks available and the ushers should ensure that no one is feeling left out, making introductions if guests are looking isolated.
There should be a clear area for drinks once guests arrive at the reception. The ushers should point guests in the right direction. If drinks are held in a large open space, guests should be gathered into one area to maintain atmosphere.
- Guests should be offered a drink on arrival; several waiters must be positioned at the entrance to the reception.
- Service should be seamless; guests should never be left with an empty glass, unless they have refused a top-up.
- If guests are standing on grass, a canopy or gazebo is a convenient sun (or rain) shield.
- An area of matting on the grass is a good idea, as it will prevent ladies' heels from sinking into the grass.
