Scottish Bishops
Scottish Bishops are addressed in the same way as Irish Bishops, except for the Primus of Scotland who acts as the Presiding Bishop.
He is elected by the other Bishops and has no Metropolitan power. He is styled "The Most Rev the Primus".
Bishops, including the Primus, sign, after a cross, their Christian name, followed by their diocese. The exceptions are the Bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness signs "Moray", and the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane signs "St Andrews", without the other dioceses.
The Bishop of Edinburgh signs by his Christian name followed by "Edenburgen".
Retired Scottish bishops are addressed in the same way as other retired bishops (i.e. Rt Rev John Smith, Dear Bishop).
Bishops: Scottish Episcopal Church
Since the Scottish Episcopal Church is not the State Church of Scotland, a bishop has no official precedence and recognition and is, therefore, addressed as ‘The Right Rev John Macklin, Bishop of ......’, and not as ‘The Right Rev the Bishop of ......’. Socially, the style is as for a diocesan bishop of the Church of England, except for the Primus of Scotland who acts as the Presiding Bishop. He is elected by the other bishops and has no metropolitan power. The style is ‘The Most Reverend the Primus’.
