It has been estimated that only 5% of the UK’s charities, namely the largest, receive 80% of charitable donations. With smaller charities losing out, Marcelle Speller founded Localgiving.com in 2008 to redress the balance, matching up local causes with local donors, which has been indispensable for those groups too small to register with the Charity Commission. Localgiving.com now has around 4,000 local charities and community groups on its website and a database of more than 60,000 registered supporters. Speller’s organisation has raised around £5.5 million for small causes so far, as well as facilitating more than £1.75 million in match fund grants. In 2013 Speller, who is also a director of New Philanthropy Capital, was awarded a Beacon Fellowship for Pioneering Philanthropy and was named Philanthropist of the Year at the Spear’s Wealth Management Awards.
