Questions on Honeymoons

My mum insists she wants us to stay in our local hotel for a couple of days before our honeymoon proper. I just want to jet off the day after the wedding. What should I do? Victoria, Altrincham
Your mother's advice is wise: you will feel very tired after the wedding, so a day or two's rest before travelling may be welcome. Equally, it is useful to have some time to repack and tie up any loose ends after the wedding day.

We're a bit worried about our job situation in this credit crunch and our dream honeymoon is going to be a real extravagance. A girlfriend told me that people these days often have the honeymoon on the gift list. Is this acceptable in your view? Kia, Edgware
Asking for contributions towards your honeymoonis a popular and acceptable thing to do. Leading travel agents offer a service, often called a 'honeypo', and porvide the facility for guests to donate online. Generally, guests like to see what they are contributing towards, so make sure that your honeymoon is organised well in advance and before the invitations go out.

Should I keep our honeymoon destination secret from my soon to be wife? Danny, London
Traditionally, the groom organised, and paid for, the honeymoon. Nowadays, with joint finances and equality of the sexes, this is inpractical and outdated. Some couples organise a budget and then, if the bride wants to be surprised, she will let the groom organise the trip. More usual, however, if for the couple to plan it together. You should, however treat her to a few surprises along the way - a flight upgrade, a suite, an excursion, a romantic dinner etc - if your finances allow.
